The New York Daily News is a daily tabloid newspaper in New York City. The paper was the first successful tabloid in America and at its peak in the mid-20th century it was one of the most widely read newspapers in the world. The Daily News attracted readers with sensational coverage of crime, scandal, and violence; lurid photographs; and cartoons and entertainment features. Its staff of reporters included acclaimed investigative journalists such as Ida Siegal and William Shawn.
The newspaper was founded in 1919 by Joseph Medill Patterson. In the 1920s it became a major force in politics and the media, covering stories such as Wallis Simpson’s romance with King Edward VIII, which led to his abdication. It also made extensive use of wirephotographs.
In addition to its flagship tabloid, the Daily News publishes a number of supplements and special issues. These include the Friday supplement known as WKND, the Yale Daily News Magazine and annual editions celebrating Yale’s Indigenous, Black, Latino, Asian American and Pacific Islander communities in collaboration with their respective cultural centers and affiliated student groups. It is also a founding member of the Newseum and maintains an office in Washington, D.C.
As part of its commitment to education, the Daily News offers a free digital subscription for teachers. This subscription allows classrooms to access all the paper’s articles and features, including interactive maps, videos, timelines, and other resources. In addition, each article is accompanied by comprehension and critical thinking questions to help students analyze the information.
