The Daily News is a newspaper in the United States. It was the first successful tabloid and, at its peak in the 1920s, had the highest circulation of any paper in the country. It attracted readers with sensational coverage of crime and scandal, lurid photographs, and cartoons and entertainment features. Many of its staffers went on to prominent careers in journalism and public life, including William F. Buckley, Lan Samantha Chang, Joseph Lieberman, Strobe Talbott, Garry Trudeau, and Daniel Yergin. The Daily News Historical Archive, a project of the Yale University Library, makes available over 140 years of the paper through digitized copies.
The digitized versions of the Daily News are available through a web interface that allows searching and browsing, as well as downloading of full articles. The archive is made possible through a generous gift from an anonymous donor.
A free service, the Archive provides access to scanned and fully searchable issues of the paper dating back to its inception in 1878. The YDN is the oldest college daily in the United States, and its writers and contributors have included such luminaries as William F. Buckley, John Hersey, Joseph Lieberman, Sargent Shriver, and Paul Steiger. The YDN has also trained generations of students, and its alumni include a number of prominent journalists and figures in American politics, as well as notable members of Congress, the Supreme Court, and state government.
With a YDN AllSides Media Bias Rating of Left, the Daily News promotes liberal and progressive thought and policy agendas. Its coverage of the Middle East and North Korea, among other topics, is often critical of American foreign policy. The YDN has also long been a proponent of racial integration, and has been influential in helping to bring about civil rights legislation and other social reforms.
In addition to its news and opinion pages, the YDN has numerous other sections, such as intense city news coverage, celebrity gossip, classified ads, comics, and a sports section. Its editorial stance has varied over the decades, but in general it is described as moderately centrist with a high-minded, populist legacy.
The YDN is the most popular newspaper in New York City and one of the most-read newspapers in the United States, with a print and digital edition in both English and Spanish. It is published every weekday during the school year, except for holidays and university closings. The paper’s online edition is updated continuously throughout the day.
