Daily News Dataset

Daily News is a digital newspaper available online, on your computer and mobile devices. It delivers the latest news from around the world in one place, delivered daily. The newspaper offers a simple user interface, and all the latest digital tools to give you an enhanced reading experience.

The Yale Daily News is the nation’s oldest college daily and has been financially and editorially independent since its founding on January 28, 1878. The News serves the Yale and New Haven communities. The News publishes Monday through Friday during the academic year and produces several special issues each year, including a Yale-Harvard Game Day Issue and the Commencement Issue. In addition, the News runs a variety of special initiatives celebrating Yale’s Indigenous, Black, Latine and Asian American communities.

The New York Daily News is a tabloid newspaper founded in 1919. The paper considers itself “New York’s Hometown Newspaper,” informing everyday New Yorkers about their city. It is known for its zesty headlines—perhaps most famously the 1975 screamer, “Ford to City: Drop Dead”—gossip, and strong city coverage. It has won many Pulitzer Prizes, most recently in 2015 for a partnership with ProPublica that uncovered how authorities used an obscure law to evict tenants from their homes. In recent years, the News has struggled with declining circulation, but its parent company Tronc, which also owns The Chicago Tribune, has committed to maintaining the quality of the newspaper.

Each Daily News article contains comprehension and critical thinking questions that encourage students to read deeper into the story. These questions are located under the article, in the section titled “Background” and “Resources.”

In addition to daily news articles, this collection includes historical and current editorial cartoons, letters to the editor, opinion pieces, book reviews, and multimedia content. Also included are full transcripts of weekly radio interviews with journalists from the Daily News, the New York Times and other major news outlets.

This dataset was created using the Daily News Data Explorer, which provides a visualization and exploration tool for public domain information in the form of a database that is constantly updated. The tool allows users to easily create graphs and charts from the information contained in the Daily News website, and can be used as a resource for classroom assignments.

The Daily News Sentiment Index is a high-frequency measure of economic sentiment based on lexical analysis of economics-related news articles. The methodology is described in Buckman, Shapiro, Sudhof and Wilson (2020).

Each day the Daily News generates a sentiment score for each news article. This sentiment score is then aggregated into a time series, which is published at a weekly frequency. The Daily News Sentiment Index is provided as a complement to the more widely used Consumer Confidence Survey. Both indicators are designed to provide a more complete picture of economic sentiment.
