Automobiles are wheeled vehicles powered by an engine for transportation. These four-wheeled transports are usually fueled by gasoline but may be powered by electricity or any other liquid fuel. The first autos were steam or electric and had three wheels. Leonardo da Vinci was working on designs for these types of transport in the early 1600s. Nicolas Joseph Cugnot built the first self-propelled car in Paris in 1789, a heavy, three-wheeled, steam-powered vehicle with a boiler that projected out front and could travel up to 3 mph (5 kph). Henry Ford’s invention of the assembly line in the early 1900s allowed his company to produce automobiles at a lower price, making them affordable for many more Americans. Soon Ford, General Motors and Chrysler became the largest manufacturers of American cars. Other nations, such as Japan and Germany, began to produce cars too.

The automobile is a remarkable technology that has brought enormous benefits to society. Its invention has shaped the way we live and will continue to shape our lives in the future.
