Founded by Joseph Medill Patterson in 1919, the Daily News is a tabloid newspaper based in Jersey City, NJ. In 1947, it became the first daily newspaper in the United States to reach a circulation of 2.4 million copies a day. Today, it’s one of the largest newspapers in the country.
Move downtown in 2011
Founded in 1897 by Joseph Medill Patterson, The Daily News has had a distinguished history. It’s been one of the city’s leading newspapers for more than a century. The news outlet has a rich history of conservative politics and high-minded populism. In 2011, the paper made the leap from its old home on East 42nd Street to a new downtown headquarters.
The news outlet’s move to Lower Manhattan was the first of its kind in New York City. It was formerly located at State Street, which is too large for the newspaper’s needs.
Pulitzer Prize for Public Service
Often considered the most prestigious of the Pulitzer Prizes, the Public Service award recognizes exemplary work in journalism. The award includes a gold medal, a $15,000 prize, and the recognition of a journalism school.
The Pulitzer Prizes are awarded by the Pulitzer Board, which is made up of 19 members. These include newspaper executives and editors, Columbia University scholars, and other distinguished persons. This board is empowered to withhold prizes for substandard entries.
The Pulitzer Prizes were first awarded in 1917 by the Columbia School of Journalism. The Pulitzer organization says the prizes have been “recognized as a measure of the highest standards of journalism in the United States.”
The Pulitzer Prizes are a great example of the First Amendment. Journalists are honored for their work in examining societal ills and advocating for change.
Digital edition replica of the print newspaper
During the past fifteen years, newspaper ad revenue has decreased by seventy-five percent. This decline has forced newspapers to cut costs and subscription revenues have become the new source of revenue. As a result, the Times is updating its edition concept for the digital age. The Times will provide its subscribers with a digital edition replica of its print newspaper anytime, anywhere.
The New York Times’ Replica Edition is available for US-based subscribers who have a Home Delivery subscription. It includes The New York Times Crossword puzzle, as well as sports box scores and advertisements. It is powered by PressReader, which makes it easy to flip through the current issue and past issues. It also includes offline reading access, via an app for your handheld device.
Current ownership
Currently, the Daily News is owned by Chicago-based media company Tronc. The paper has a circulation of more than 200,000 and continues to provide strong local news coverage. In addition, The Daily News has a sports section, classified ads, comics and celebrity gossip.
Although the Daily News is owned by a media conglomerate, it still maintains local bureaus in the Bronx and Queens. The paper also publishes a Sunday newspaper and a WPIX radio station.
